Canberra apartments characterised by minimalist design

Canberra apartments characterised by minimalist design

We often hear the expression “less is more”. To me this has a very profound and personal meaning, so much in fact that it is evident throughout the ‘One of a Kind’ complex design and approach to business.

Repurposing old material to create unique works of art

Repurposing, the finding of new uses for old materials and objects, has enabled us to be very creative with the interior and exterior design of One of a Kind Apartments. One of the many repurposed works of art in the apartments are the headboards. Have a read about what makes them so special and why we choose to repurpose materials that others may see as useless.

Native gardens and greenhouse are a major feature of One of a Kind Apartments

Gardens are a major feature of our One of a Kind Apartments at 43 Stockdale Street Dickson. They were not an after thought or tacked on after completion of the construction. They are an integral part of our design. From the outset we sought to create a hospitable human habitat not only by innovative eco-design but also by using the gardens to soften and protect, and provide amenity. Also, we considered it important to create a bountiful environment for both flora and fauna.

A new way of showcasing the maker's mark

One man's trash is another man's treasure

One man's trash is another man's treasure

I grew up on a farm and learned from an early age that a ‘clearing sale’ was often the end of a farmer’s career. All the kit and gear of a lifetime is lined up organised in lots to clear so that the new bloke can start with a clean slate. Among genuine trash can be found quality tools and machinery of yesteryear that have been superseded and made redundant by the march of progress. Such was the case with a crate of old spanners picked up from a clearing sale at Booroowa, NSW, in 2011.

3 stellar reasons for eco-design

3 stellar reasons for eco-design

One of a Kind Apartments have been coined 'eco-chic', which simply means 'simple, elegant, environmental design with a difference'. It's not necessarily a style but more a response to the existential challenge of this age –how do we lighten our footprint and do more with less? How do we use the bounty of this age to not exhaust this planet but to create a future for as many generations as we can imagine?

There are 3 obvious needs that influenced my design and considering the needs of the environment has helped meet these needs.

Eco-design celebrates Reconciliation Week

Eco-design celebrates Reconciliation Week

This week is National Reconciliation Week in Australia. It is a week I will be celebrating because I believe reconciliation to be critical to the process of acceptance and redemption. Although Reconciliation Week is about celebrating Indigenous Australians and their story it is not really about black and white. Reconciliation is a process whereby we understand that our Truth is not black or white, our Reality is not black or white and our Future is not black or white. Reconciliation is a process that allows for many voices, many inputs and a diverse community of many colours.

Art gallery foyer showcases materials with a raw finish

Art gallery foyer showcases materials with a raw finish

Our Foyer, which is also a walk through art gallery, attracts a lot of attention from our guests. We have combined steel, copper, timber and concrete to create an elemental yet warm and inviting space. This ties in with the building and design throughout our apartments, where we have chosen materials with a raw finish and allowed the natural contrast of colour and texture to create the visual appeal.

A waste enclosure with a difference

A waste enclosure with a difference

Our waste enclosure is indicative of the way in which we have approached the design and building of the apartments at 43 Stockdale Street, Dickson. We have not designed in a particular style but have asked as to the function of the waste enclosure, the materials that can facilitate this and a finish the showcases the natural beauty within the material. And in all of this we have tried to not take ourselves too seriously because it is only a waste enclosure, after all.

Parisian attention to detail in Canberra Serviced Apartments

Parisian attention to detail in Canberra Serviced Apartments

Paris is the musical home to the avant-garde of Sate, the bohemian of Piaf and the gypsy-jazz of Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt, however, we admire Paris for it’s cool sophistication epitomized by it’s haute-cuisine and haute-couture. We are inspired by the meticulous preparation and presentation of the craftspeople and their time-consuming hand-execution. At One of a Kind Apartments, you will find this same attention to detail and presentation that will ensure your stay is a very special experience.

One of a kind apartment evokes Mexico City memories

One of a kind apartment evokes Mexico City memories

We can not consider contemporary global culture without acknowledging the profound legacy of Meso-America. So it is no surprise that One of a Kind Apartments when celebrating our world’s creative centres acknowledges Mexico City’s place on the list.

Kyoto's peace and tranquillity reflected in Canberran Apartments

Kyoto is the capital of ‘bespoke’. We love visiting, not only because of our long affiliation with Japan, but also because it is easy to get lost in its many alleys and find a business or craft still practised the same as the 1600’s.

San Francisco in Canberra - celebrate the creativity

San Francisco is a city of culturally rich neighbourhoods and streetscapes and, like Canberra, is regarded as one of the world’s most walkable cities. But I know it more for being the home of the ‘beat’ writers and artists of the 50’s and the hippies and counter-culture of the 60’s.

Canberra accommodation celebrating and encouraging creativity

Canberra accommodation celebrating and encouraging creativity

I travelled extensively in my youth, over forty years ago. My destinations were creative centres and communities where craft was still very much part of daily life. Places where stone and timber were still carved, textiles hand woven, houses adorned and public spaces decorated. These were communities where everyone was an artist or artisan.
