Recently, we received a Commendation for the wildcard award at the Sustainable Cities Awards 2015, see here. This was a great achievement, and we are very grateful to Keep Australia Beautiful for conducting these awards and giving us the opportunity to get involved and showcase our sustainable business practices.
We like to put together applications and enter different awards because it challenges us to tighten up our business practices, and strive to be the best that we can. As nice as winning an award or receiving a commendation is, that is not the real prize. The real prize is building a business that we are very passionate about and are truly proud of. Also, it is the satisfaction we get from knowing we are making a contribution to tourism in Canberra, and also to sustainable building design.
One of a Kind Apartments lives, breathes and practices sustainability and endeavors to demonstrate how guests can enjoy a visit to Canberra while lessening their ‘footprint’. We do this in many ways including how we have designed and built our apartments, how we designed our gardens, how we set up and run our business, and the alternative ways we choose to think about recycling. This is evident throughout the apartments, as much of the building uses recycled and re-purposed materials.
However, many of our sustainable practices are not so obvious. For instance being a paperless and keyless business, composting kitchen scraps to make a vegetable garden for guests to use, and recycling things we once thought were non-recyclable, such as cigarette butts and toothbrushes, through Terracycle.
We wanted to take this opportunity to highlight previous posts we have put together about sustainability, as a go-to guide to help you on your way to achieving a more sustainable business/ household /garden.
We hope this helps and please let us know if you have any tips to add to our lists, we’d love to hear from you in the comments section below!
